Natural Ways For White Teeth: Without Teeth Whitening to a Bright Smile

Why White Teeth are Important and Why Many People do Teeth Whitening.

White teeth are considered as an ideal of beauty and symbolize health and hygiene. Many people feel more confident and attractive with white teeth. As a result, more and more people are turning to teeth whitening.

To get straight to the point: teeth whitening is not harmful when used correctly and offers quick and long-lasting white teeth. However, there are many patients for whom bleaching is not possible or for whom they do not want to invest money in a teeth whitening treatment. So here are my tips on how you can contribute to whiter teeth without a teeth whitening treatment - and what you should better not do.

What to do:

1. Stop Smoking

Smoking leads to discoloration of the teeth and is therefore a reason for yellow or gray teeth. The chemicals and substances in cigarettes, such as nicotine and tar, can penetrate deep into the tooth enamel and cause stains that are difficult to remove. Smoking also affects oral health and can lead to gum disease, which can further worsen the condition of the teeth. For these reasons, it is advisable to quit smoking in order to achieve not only whiter teeth but also better oral health.

2. Good Oral Hygiene - Especially With Dark Foods

Certain foods and drinks can cause teeth to become discolored or yellow over time. For example, coffee, tea, red wine, cola, fruit juices, sauces, curry and berries can all contribute to discoloration on the teeth. Acidic foods and drinks can also damage tooth enamel, making teeth more sensitive and prone to staining. For this reason, it is advisable to practice good oral hygiene when consuming these foods and drinks and to brush your teeth regularly to avoid staining. However, brushing too hard is also not beneficial (e.g. pressing too hard, brushing more than 3x a day), as this could damage the tooth enamel.

3. Regular Professional Teeth Cleaning

During a Professional Teeth Cleaning, plaque and tartar that accumulate on the teeth over time and which cannot be removed through daily oral hygiene are thoroughly removed. These deposits can lead to discolouration, which affects the natural whiteness of the teeth. Removing these deposits smoothes the surface of the teeth, which can help teeth look brighter and shinier. However, it must be emphasized that the purpose of Professional Teeth Cleaning is not to whiten teeth, but that this is only a positive side effect that does not last as long as professional teeth whitening. The aim of Professional Teeth Cleaning is to remove deposits and bacteria that have a negative impact on dental health and the entire cardiovascular system.

Dont’s

1. Whitening Toothpaste

Enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth and is made of a tough mineral that gives our teeth their hardness. Tooth enamel is the hardest material in our body and protects the underlying layers from damage caused by tooth decay, acids and bacteria.

However, even the hardest material can be damaged, such as by whitening toothpaste. These usually contain abrasive particles that wear away the tooth enamel with prolonged use and can thus permanently damage the teeth. In addition, they can also increase tooth sensitivity and irritate gums. Tooth enamel cannot be regenerated, which is why whitening toothpaste should be avoided.

2. Teeth Whitening at Home

There are forms of bleaching in which teeth can be whitened at home with so-called bleaching splints. This procedure is often called home bleaching.

This method is not recommended for the following reasons:

  • Possible damage to teeth: There is a higher risk of damage to teeth and gums with home whitening. If the trays are not properly adjusted or if the bleaching solution is left on the teeth for too long, it can damage the teeth and enamel. For professional teeth whitening in dental practices, on the other hand, gentle agents are used that can be individually dosed during treatment to protect the tooth enamel.

  • Uneven Whitening: In addition, it can be difficult to achieve an even whitening of the teeth as the trays are not as snug as a professional whitening in the dentist's office.

  • Poor Effectiveness: Home teeth whitening is typically less effective compared to professional teeth whitening in a dentist's office because the whitening solution contains a lower concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.

3. Baking Soda

Using baking soda is similar to using whitening toothpaste.

Baking soda is abrasive and can damage tooth enamel, which cannot be repaired. In addition, baking soda is not able to achieve an even whitening effect. It can stain your teeth and produce inconsistent results. Also, using baking soda is not a long-term solution. It does not whiten teeth permanently and can actually make the problem worse in the long run.

Conclusion

There are natural methods to achieve a bright smile, but these require patience and perseverance.

However, it's important to note that unsafe short-term methods such as whitening toothpaste, home bleaching, and baking soda should be avoided. These procedures can increase the risk of tooth and gum damage and produce uneven results.
